Prime Minister sacks Damian Green for breach of ministerial code

Damian Green has resigned from the cabinet after an investigation found he breached UK ministerial code.

The First Secretary of State stepped down amid allegations that pornographic material was found on a Commons computer in 2008.

Theresa May’s deputy had strongly denied claims that pornographic material was found on one of his parliamentary computers.

The findings were at odds with public statements he had made, in which he said he had not been told by the police about the pornography find at the time.

An official report by the Cabinet Office found that statements he had made about being unaware pornographic material had been found on his computer were “inaccurate and misleading”, falling short of the ministerial code.

Mrs May said she had “carefully considered” the findings of an investigation by Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood into statements Mr Green made on November 4 and 11, which he has now accepted were “inaccurate and misleading”.

The PM went on: “This falls short of the Seven Principles of Public Life and is a breach of the ministerial code – a conclusion which has been endorsed by Sir Alex Allan, the independent adviser on ministers’ interests.”

“It is therefore with deep regret, and enduring gratitude for the contribution you have made over many years, that I asked you to resign from the Government and have accepted your resignation.”
